How to Read Your Matriz del Destino Chart
Having your octagram calculated is only the first step. Reading it well — understanding what each number means in each position — is where self-knowledge really begins. This guide explains how to interpret each zone of your matrix and in what order it’s best to read them.
The golden rule: position × arcana
No position is interpreted on its own. The real meaning emerges from combining two layers: what that position represents (for example, “your relationship with money”) and what energy the arcana that landed there brings. That’s why two people with the same central arcana can experience it very differently, depending on which other positions that same number — or its neighbours — appear in. It’s exactly the approach we apply on every arcana page on this site: the “In Each Position of the Matrix” section shows how the reading of the same arcana changes depending on where it falls.
Start with your Point E (comfort zone)
If you’re only going to read one position, make it this one. Point E is the synthesis of your day, month, year, and their own sum: it’s the arcana you tend to return to again and again, your default state. It isn’t necessarily “who you are at your best,” but the energy you feel most comfortable in, for better and for worse.
Then, your personality, talents, and mission (A, B, and D)
Point A describes your character and the way you present yourself to the world. Point B, your natural talents and the generational energy you carry. Point D — the sum of A, B, and C — describes your earthly mission: what kind of contribution or learning life is steering you toward on this plane. Reading these three together gives you a fairly complete snapshot of “who you are” before moving into more specific themes like money or relationships.
Your karmic tail: what repeats without you deciding
The karmic tail is made up of three arcana, at the bottom of the octagram, describing patterns that tend to repeat in your life almost automatically — often inherited from your family history. It isn’t a sentence: it’s information. Recognising the pattern is, almost always, the first step toward no longer repeating it without realising. We dedicate a full guide to this topic in karmic tail.
Your masculine and feminine lines
These two lines describe your relationship with masculine and feminine energies — not necessarily your literal parents, but the principles of structure/action (masculine) and intuition/care (feminine) that we all carry within us, regardless of gender. Reading them together tends to explain patterns in romantic and family bonds that repeat throughout life.
Your money line
This position describes your relationship with prosperity: how you tend to generate, receive, and manage resources. It doesn’t predict whether “you’ll be rich or poor” — that depends on countless real-world variables — but it points to energetic blocks and predispositions worth keeping in mind in your professional and financial decisions.
Your four purposes
Personal, social, general, and planetary: four layers of the same concept, from the most intimate (your personal purpose) to the broadest (your planetary purpose, your contribution to something bigger than yourself). It’s best to read them in that order, from the inside out, rather than starting with the most abstract.
One last piece of advice: read in layers, not all at once
It’s tempting to want to understand all twenty-something positions in your matrix in a single sitting, but most people get more out of reading in layers: first personality and comfort zone, then relationships and money, and only at the end the karmic tail and the more abstract purposes. Our calculator organises the result exactly this way, with tabs by theme — purpose, relationships, career, strengths and challenges — so you can come back to each layer whenever you like. If you haven’t calculated it yet, you can do it for free in our Matriz del Destino calculator.
